Tanfield, County Durham born outside left Joe Lumsden began his football career with Howden Rangers in 1893 and played for Tow Law and Stockton in 1895, from where he was signed by Second Division club Burton Wanderers in the 1896 close season, making his Football League debut at Walsall that September. He spent a season on the banks of the River Trent and clearly caught the attention of First Division club Liverpool who signed him in June 1897 after 5 goals in 29 matches for The Brewers.
Lumsden scored twice and created one on his Reds debut in a 3-2 away win at Nottingham Forest on 27th November 1897. After failing to link up in the centre with outside-left Thomas Bradshaw in the following match, which was a 2-1 defeat to Wolves, Lumsden was moved to the left flank where he stayed for a few matches, making in total 8 appearances before losing his place and he never to appear on the scoresheet again. The following May he left Anfield and returned to the Second Division, joining Glossop North End, his last recorded club, where he spent two seasons scoring 19 goals in 59 matches before leaving The Hillmen in 1900.
