Hednesford, Staffordshire born inside forward Jimmy Lyons joined Derby County from Hednesford Town in January 1920, the week after he had made his debut in senior football for Hednesford in an FA Cup 1st Round proper tie at Castleford Town. From there, he found himself playing a First Division match at Roker Park, Sunderland the next weekend, scoring as Derby lost 2-1, then following that up with a brace at home to Sheffield United in a 5-1 victory a week after. His four seasons at Derby produced 33 goals in 86 appearances but Derby were relegated in 1921.
He played in the 1923 FA Cup semi final defeat to West Ham United at Stamford Bridge as they were beaten 5-2, and after the season end (because of injury?) he didn’t play again until after he’d joined Wrexham in 1925. He had a single season at The Racecourse Ground, scoring 13 goals in 35 appearances including a hat-trick against Nelson in February 1926, before returning to non league with Hednesford Town later that year.
He was the younger brother of Aston Villa and Port Vale full back Tom Lyons and the older brother of Clapton Orient and Tottenham Hotspur full back Bert Lyons.
NB In this photograph he stands with Derby team mate Lionel Murphy.
