Peterhead, Aberdeenshire born Charles Mackie began with local Highland League club Peterhead in 1901 and moved to Aberdeen, scoring 40 goals in 60 appearances for The Dons before joining Second Division Manchester United in June 1904. He made his Football League debut at Burslem Port Vale in September 1904 and scored 4 goals in 7 appearances for United but moved to Southern League West Ham United in June 1905. Charles was one of five players to make their debut for The Irons against Swindon Town in a 1-0 victory on the 2nd September 1905 but played only 10 times that autumn, scoring 3 goals, before returning to Aberdeen in January 1906, where he added 4 goals in 8 appearances to his previous total. He then moved to Lochgelly United in August 1906, where he spent 3 years before moving for a season to East Fife in June 1909, being released by the Fifers at the end of April 1910.
