Description

Motherwell, Lanarkshire born inside right James “Jerry” Mackie started as a junior with Bo’Ness in 1913 before joining his hometown club Motherwell in 1914. After World War One he moved to Blantyre Celtic in 1919, joining Southern League Champions Portsmouth in May 1920. He played only 6 times in their inaugural 1920-21 Football League campaign making his debut at Millwall that October, but didn’t score his first Portsmouth goal until February 1922, after which he became a first team regular, scoring in double figures for each of the next five seasons and being Portsmouth’s primary source of goals along with the prolific Willie Haines.

He missed only one game as Portsmouth won the Third Division (South) Championship in 1923-24, and was ever present as they were promoted to the First Division in 1926-27, but in March 1928 he joined near neighbours Southampton after 82 goals in 263 appearances. He scored a hat-trick in his first home game for Saints in a 6-1 demolition of Barnsley, and scored 24 goals in 84 games for Saints over the next three seasons, before joining Cork Athletic in 1931.
