Little Hulton, Salford born goalkeeper George “Geordie” Maddison began his career with Birtley Colliery in 1921 before joining Tottenham Hotspur in 1922 where he was initially understudy to Herbert Blake, making his Football League debut at Bolton Wanderers in April 1923 and continuing to be the principal goalkeeper during the 1923-24 season. He made a total of 41 appearances in all competitions for the White Hart Lane club before he signed for Hull City in June 1924.
He made his Tigers’ debut at home against Stockport County on 8th November 1924 and was an ever present in 1925-26 and 1926-27, achieving the feat twice more in his 14 seasons at the club, making his final appearance in February 1938. He has the second most League appearances for Hull City, with 430 League appearances for the club between 1924 and 1938, as well as playing in 26 other cup ties. He was Hull City’s goalkeeper as they won the Third Division (North) Championship in 1932-33 three seasons after their relegation from the Second Division in 1930.
His son, also named George and also a goalkeeper, played professionally for Aldershot, twice in 1948-49, and 11 times for York City in 1953-54.
