Description

Darlington, County Durham born wing half (he could play all across the line) Alf Marshall played for local junior sides Darlington St John’s and Darlington St Augustine’s from where he was signed by Second Division club Fulham in 1909, making his Football League debut at Bradford Park Avenue that September, one of a pair of appearances he made that season. Never a regular in The Cottagers’ line up before the First World War, he played in around half their matches in their 1912-13 and 1913-14 campaigns, but after the War had severely interrupted his career he returned to Craven Cottage in 1919 and missed only 4 matches of their 1919-20 campaign, before he was sold to First Division club Oldham Athletic in the summer of 1920 after 107 matches for Fulham.

At Oldham he only played 7 matches in his first season but found a regular place during 1921-22, missing only 5 matches. However having been a regular during the first half of their 1922-23 campaign, he played his last match of 69 for The Latics, scoring 3 goals, in January 1923 and whether football related, he is recorded as dying in 1923, aged 35.
