Having started his football career with Blowick Juniors after the end of the First World War, Blowick, Southport born left back Jimmy Marshall joined Third Division (North) club Southport from Blowick Working Lads in 1921, making his Football League debut against Hartlepools United at Haig Avenue that September, one of 9 appearances he made in his debut season.
In five seasons at Southport he only played 27 matches of which 21 came before January 1923 with 12 appearances in 1922-23 before he lost his place in January 1923. Thereafter he failed to make an appearance in 1923-24 and appeared only once in 1924-25 at Accrington Stanley in November. He played his last match of 5 appearances during 1925-26 again at Accrington Stanley in May 1926, before leaving the professional game.
