Description

Glasgow born inside right Jimmy Mason was a fine one club servant but without doubt lost many of his best footballing years to the Second World War. He began his football career with Mossvale YMCA and from there joined Third Lanark aged 17, making his Scottish League debut for The Warriors in 1936. The following year he was described as “a youngster with a big future, who plays with all the confidence of a seasoned veteran…. Jimmy is a grand ball-worker with the happy knack of not overdoing it, and is quick to shoot when he sees an opening”.

However his career was badly interrupted by the War, during which he served in the Armed Forces. After being posted in Southern England, he appeared as a wartime guest for Charlton Athletic, Portsmouth and Brentford, and after the conflict he resumed his Third Lanark career winning 7 full Scotland caps between October 1948, when he made his international debut in a 3-1 win over Wales at Ninian Park, Cardiff and May 1951, scoring 4 goals for his country. He also represented The Scottish League on 7 occasions between September 1948 and September 1950. He played over 200 games for Third Lanark and retired in 1952.
