Description

Lisburn, County Antrim goalkeeper Gerry Matier began his football career with Irish League club Coleraine, from where he was signed by Second Division club Blackburn Rovers in 1937, making his Football League debut against Swansea Town on New Year’s Day 1938 in place of Jim Barron. Matier played 20 matches before the end of the season but only once more during 1938-39 as Barron reclaimed the gloves, and he then signed for Bradford City in August 1939 before his career was severely interrupted by the outbreak of the Second World War a month later.

During the War Matier had spells in Irish football with Dundalk in 1940, Brideville in 1944 and Glentoran in 1945, but returned to Bradford City after the conflict playing an FA Cup tie for The Bantams against Notts County in November 1945, Matier signed for Plymouth Argyle in September 1946 but had not played for The Pilgrims when he joined Torquay United that November, where he played 18 matches for The Gulls before the end of the season, his last known club before his retirement.

NB in the photograph he trains with Blackburn Rovers centre half Fred Hall.
