Description

Brandon Colliery, County Durham born centre forward Joe Mawson’s football career started at Crook Town in 1925, playing for Washington Colliery in 1926, from where he joined Durham City, spending 1926-27 on their books without making a first team appearance. He joined Bishop Auckland in 1927 and in 1928 he signed for Second Division Stoke City, making his Football League debut at Swansea Town in February 1929, scoring in a 3-3 draw.

Initially a fringe player although a regular scorer when given the opportunity, he broke into the first team in 1931, scoring 24 goals in 1931-32, a season in which he was the club’s top goalscorer as Stoke missed out on promotion, finishing third. This included a hat-trick in a 3-3 draw at Tottenham Hotspur in March 1932. His 16 goals the following season helped Stoke go one better, finishing the season as Second Division Champions, but he only played twice in the top tier in 1933-34 before being sold to Nottingham Forest in the 1934 close season after 50 goals in 93 appearances.

However he played only 4 times for Forest during 1934-35, scoring once, before moving to Stockport County in the 1935 close season, where his fortunes were no better, making only 4 appearances for The Hatters in the autumn of 1935. He joined Irish League Linfield later the same year and returned to England in 1936 to play for Crewe Alexandra, scoring twice in 12 appearances for The Alex before ending his professional career in 1937.
