Description

Waterhouses, County Durham born centre forward Rance Maycock had a significant career in north east non league football before joining the senior leagues. He began his football career with Waterhouses Rovers, and played for Stanley United in 1922, Esh Winning in 1923, Willington in 1924, Annfield Plain in 1925, and all of Waterhouses Rovers, Esh Winning, Tow Law Town, Spennymoor United and Shildon in 1926 and was again playing for Esh Winning in 1927 before signing for Second Division club South Shields in March 1928, making his Football League debut against Reading at the end of the same month, although he couldn’t help prevent their relegation at the end of the season.

He scored 4 goals for South Shields against Rotherham United in March 1929 and a hat-trick against Southport in April 1930, and was the club’s top scorer both seasons. When South Shields became Gateshead in 1930, Maycock played his fourth and final season before joining Guildford City in 1931 after 42 goals in 74 matches but he returned to Football League action in 1932 with Accrington Stanley, scoring 4 goals in 20 matches for Stanley during a single season at Peel Park before a return to Guildford City, his final club before his eventual retirement.
