Dundee born inside left Fred McDiarmid began his football career with hometown junior club Dundee Parkmore, from where he signed for Scottish League club Partick Thistle in September 1897, making his Scottish League debut in a 4-2 defeat at HibernianĀ on Saturday, 2nd October 1897, scoring 14 goals in 38 matches for Thistle before signing for hometown club Dundee in the summer of 1899.
His debut for his hometown club came against St Mirren in October 1899, scoring in a 5-2 victory. He became a regular fixture in Dundee’s first eleven, scoring 24 goals in 160 matches for The Dees before a transfer to Southern League club Tottenham Hotspur in the summer of 1906.
A fringe player during a single season at White Hart Lane, he played 11 matches for Spurs before a transfer to Northampton Town in the summer of 1907. He was part of Northampton Town’s 1908-09 Southern League Championship winning team and also played in their FA Charity Shield team beaten 2-0 by Newcastle United at Stamford Bridge in April 1909 after they were crowned Southern League Champions, and scored 17 goals in 77 matches for The Cobblers before a move to Ireland to play for Belfast Distillery in 1910 ahead of his eventual retirement.
