Description

Kilcolgan, County Galway born centre forward Johnny McDonnell started his footballing career with Athlone Town and then played for the amateur Irish League club Bohemians during his entire career. McDonnell was a prolific goalscorer whose best season came in 1911-12 when he netted 32 times from just 30 appearances (14 from 14 in the League). This marginally eclipsed his previous best total of 31 goals in 28 appearances (15 in 9 League appearances) in 1908-09, and he finished with a career total of over 150 goals. Both of these appear in the top 10 of Bohemian record goalscoring seasons. With Bohemians he was an Irish Cup finalist in both 1909 and 1911.

McDonnell won four full international caps for the Ireland, playing first against England at The Baseball Ground, Derby in February 1911 and latterly against Wale at Grosvenor Park, Belfast in January 1913, without scoring in any of his international matches. He also won four Amateur international caps between 1910 and 1914 scoring three goals, scoring on his debut against England in a 4-4 draw at Elland Road in November 1909; he scored again on his next cap in a 3-2 win over England exactly a year later at Solitude, Belfast. He also played against England in his final two caps, scoring once again in another 3-2 win at The Solitude in October 1912. He represented The Irish League on five occasions between 1909 and 1914.
