Glasgow born outside right Billy McEwan began his football career with local junior club Petershill from where he was signed by Third Division (South) club Queens Park Rangers in May 1938, making his senior debut in a Third Division Cup match against Aldershot in January 1939 and his Football League debut in March at Crystal Palace, scoring the only goal of the match. However his football career was severely interrupted by the outbreak of the Second World War that September, by when he had scored twice in 16 matches for Rangers.
After the War he returned to Loftus Road and featured regularly in their first four peacetime seasons. Having missed out on promotion by finishing runners up in 1946-47, McEwan helped Rangers go one better when they were promoted as Third Division (South) champions in 1948, but he was far less regular in the Second Division and joined Leyton Orient in February 1950 after 20 goals in 110 matches for Queens Park Rangers. He had two seasons at Brisbane Road, scoring 3 times in 21 matches before joining Gravesend & Northfleet in 1951, his final club ahead of his eventual retirement.
