South Shields, County Durham born centre forward Herbert McFerran had a brief senior football career. It is possible he was on Darlington’s books while the club played in the North Eastern League after the end of the First World War, and after they joined the newly formed Third Division (North) in 1921, McFerran made his Football League debut at Crewe Alexandra in April 1922, scoring twice in a 7-3 defeat, his only appearance of the season as Darlington finished runners up in the division, narrowly missing out on promotion.
The following season he appeared twice for The Quakers in September 1922, scoring in a 3-2 win over Barrow at Feethams, but had to wait until March 1923 to play for the first team again in a 2-2 draw at Tranmere Rovers. This would prove his last match for Darlington, and he joined fellow Third Division (North) club Durham City, but he failed to make a first team appearance for The Citizens during his time there and his football career thereafter is uncertain.
