Eddlewood, Hamilton, Lanarkshire born right winger Frank McGurk played junior football for Blantyre Celtic in 1930 before joining Scottish League Clyde in 1931, spending two seasons at Shawfield, from where he was signed by First Division club Birmingham City in the 1933 close season after 19 goals in 74 matches. He made his Football League debut at Arsenal in August 1933 and scored his only 3 goals for The Blues in 3 consecutive defeats after the New Year.
Though he showed no signs of enhancing his goalscoring reputation earned with Clyde, his dribbling skills had attracted the attention of the Scotland national selectors. After only two years as a professional, McGurk won his only international cap in a 3-2 defeat to Wales at Ninian Park on 4th October 1933.
The following season he only added one more appearance to the 18 he made for Birmingham in 1933-34 before moving to Third Division (South) club Bristol City in the summer of 1935. However at Ashton Gate he found opportunities limited and made only 4 appearances across the season for The Robins before joining Birmingham Works League club Whittaker Ellis in 1936.
