Glasgow born inside forward Tom McInnes began his football career with Cowlairs and while with them he received his only international cap for Scotland, playing in a 7-0 win over Ireland at Ibrox Park in March 1889, scoring the seventh goal. He first moved to England later in 1889 to join Football League club Notts County, making his Football League debut against Wolverhampton Wanderers the same December. Having established himself in The Magpies’ line up he played 6 FA Cup ties en route to their appearance in the 1891 FA Cup Final, McInnes scoring in a 3-3 draw with Sunderland in the first semi final at Bramall Lane, but the Final at The Kennington Oval was lost 3-1 to Blackburn Rovers.

McInnes had a brief spell on loan at Glasgow Rangers in 1892 but returned to Meadow Lane, but after Notts County were relegated at the end of the 1892-93 season he returned to Scottish League football joining Third Lanark, having scored 27 goals in 81 appearances for The Magpies. In the 1894 close season he moved back to England signing for First Division club Everton, scoring 10 goals in his first season at Goodison Park as Everton finished runners up in the League Championship.

The following season they finished third but McInnes joined Southern League club Luton Town in the summer of 1896. becoming Luton’s club captain and missing only one match in their inaugural Football League season, also playing in their first League fixture, a draw at Leicester Fosse in September 1897. Indeed in their three League seasons McInnes missed only five fixtures, scoring 24 goals in 105 appearances (ex the Southern League 1896-97 campaign) before joining non league Bedford Queens Engineers, where he finished his career.
