Dundee born wing half Robert McIntosh joined hometown professional club Dundee in 1912 after a junior career with Thistle in 1910 and Dundee Fairfield in 1911, and despite joining Motherwell in 1918 after an initial loan move to Firhill a year earlier, he returned to Dens Park in 1919 before being sold to First Division Newcastle United in July 1920. He made his Football League debut for Newcastle at West Bromwich Albion that September and soon established himself as a regular performer in the Magpies’ first eleven, scoring his first Toon goal in a 2-2 draw in the derby against Sunderland at St James’ Park in November 1921.
Exceptionally tall, his 4 seasons at St James’ Park saw 2 goals in 103 games, however he lost his place in the first eleven in February 1924 and was not selected for Newcastle’s FA Cup Final triumph over Aston Villa 2 months later. He joined Second Division Stockport County in October 1924 but only made 8 appearances for the Edgeley Park outfit before retiring from professional football.
