Glasgow born Hugh McIntyre was the older brother of James, another Scotland international who also played for Rangers. A versatile player, McIntyre usually played at centre half but was also known to lead the attack or even play in goal. He began with Glasgow Northern, then joined the new Partick Thistle club before moving to Rangers in 1878. He played in the 1879 Scottish Cup Final, which Rangers drew before refusing a replay against Vale of Leven. McIntyre made 13 Scottish Cup appearances for Rangers in total. He played for Scotland once, in a 5-1 victory over Wales at Hampden Park on 27th March 1880.
Later the same year he moved south to Blackburn Rovers. He was their captain in the 1884 FA Cup Final when they beat Queen’s Park 2-1 at The Kennington Oval, and also played in their 1885 and 1886 FA Cup triumphs. In 1885 they again beat Queen’s Park, this time 2-0, and in 1886 they beat West Bromwich Albion 2-0 in a replay at Derby after the first Final finished 0-0.
