Description

Partick, Glasgow born outside left Bobby McNeil played junior football for Wishaw Caledonians in 1908 and Shettleston in 1909 before he signed for Scottish League Hamilton Academical in 1910. He soon gained recognition for his performances at Douglas Park, appearing 3 times for The Scottish League between November 1912 and November 1913 as they beat The Irish League twice and The Southern League.

He transferred to First Division Chelsea in the 1914 close season, making his Football League debut at Tottenham Hotspur that September and playing in their losing FA Cup Final team of 1915 in the so called “Khaki Cup Final” against Sheffield United at Old Trafford. But his career was then interrupted by the First World War, and during the War he guested for Bathgate in 1915, Motherwell in 1915-16 scoring 3 times in 12 appearances, Wishaw Thistle in 1916 and Hamilton Accies from 1916 to 1919.

He was a mainstay of Chelsea’s post War team, playing in their losing 1920 FA Cup semi final team beaten 3-1 by eventual Cup winners Aston Villa at Bramall Lane, and missing one game in two seasons between 1921 and 1923. Although they were relegated in 1924 he remained with the club, and by the time he played his last game in April 1927, and subsequently retired already aged 38, he had played 307 times for The Pensioners scoring 32 goals.
