Description

Dalserf, Lanarkshire born left back George McQueen began his football career with Larkhall Thistle and played for Parkhead before joining Glasgow Rangers in 1917, making his Scottish League debut in a win over Hibernian at Ibrox that September. He made 23 appearances for Rangers over a four year period which saw him have loan spells with St Mirren and Third Lanark in 1918, making a single appearance for both, and for Kilmarnock and Partick Thistle in 1919, for whom he made a single and a pair of appearances respectively.

After being released by Rangers in 1921, he signed for Airdrieonians and was immediately an important member of the side as they became one of the strongest in Scotland, finishing runners-up in the Scottish League for four seasons in succession and winning the Scottish Cup in 1924, McQueen lifting the trophy as their captain. He remained with The Diamonds as a regular until retiring in 1933, aged 38, having made over 400 appearances overall and scored more than 30 goals from penalties and free-kicks, in which he specialised, scoring 27 goals in 388 League appearances.

McQueen was selected for The Scottish League in November 1925 when he played in a 7-3 win over The Irish League at Solitude, Belfast, and he also travelled with the Scotland team as reserve on two occasions, but never received a full international cap.

NB although published in 1922, this image doesn’t appear to show McQueen wearing a traditional Airdrie V shirt, and more likely this shows him wearing a Rangers shirt, although it’s hard to be definitive as to which club he was at when the photograph was taken.
