Description

Blantyre, Lanarkshire born centre forward Alex Menzies played for Blantyre Victoria in 1901 before joining Heart of Midlothian in December 1902, making his debut the same month against Hibernian in a player benefit match, making one further Scottish League appearance that season. He had a spell on loan at Motherwell in 1903 scoring 3 goals in 6 matches for The Steelmen, and was then loaned to Arthurlie in August 1904 where he scored 11 goals in 16 matches before returning to Hearts in May 1905, where he made a further 46 appearances, scoring 26 goals, and won a full Scotland cap when selected to play against England in a 2-1 victory in April 1906 at Hampden Park in front of 103,000 spectators.

He signed for First Division Manchester United in November 1906 and made his Football League debut almost immediately at Sheffield Wednesday, scoring in a 5-2 defeat, but his impact at Old Trafford proved limited and he added only 3 more goals in a total of 25 appearances for The Red Devils during his two seasons with United. He was sold to Southern League Luton Town in the 1908 close season and stayed a season at Kenilworth Road before returning to Scotland to join Dundee in 1909, scoring twice in 2 matches. Brief spells followed with Hamilton Academical the same year, for whom he scored twice in 6 matches, and with Port Glasgow Athletic in 1910, scoring 3 goals in 7 matches, before he finished his career at Dumbarton, where he played 8 times, scoring 8 goals between January and September 1911.
