Mossend, Lanarkshire born centre half Alex Miller began his football career with local junior club Mossend Celtic, playing for Parkhead in 1933 and Shawfield in 1934, from where he signed for Glasgow Celtic in May 1935, making his Scottish League debut against Kilmarnock that October, but found first team opportunities few and far between due to the excellence of Willie Lyon. He still got to play for Celtic in the unofficial British Championship match against Sunderland in September 1936, which ended in a 1-1 draw.He also played 5 matches as Celtic won the Scottish League Championship in 1937-38 and 10 matches in total for The Bhoys before signing for First Division club Preston North End in October 1938, where he made his Football League debut at Liverpool that December, playing just once more the following month in a 5-0 win over Birmingham City at Deepdale.
After the outbreak of the Second World War he returned on loan to Celtic for one Regional League game in October 1940. At the end of the War he signed for Motherwell in 1945 featuring in the 1945 Southern League Cup Final which ended in defeat by Rangers, and then joined Dundee United in May 1946, where he played 44 matches before joining Morton in October 1947. Described as “one of the grand old veterans of the game”, he played for Morton in the 1948 Scottish Cup Fina, again losing out to Rangers, this time after extra time in a replay; his performance in both matches against his internationalist opponents Billy Williamson and Willie Thornton, at the age of 36, was singled out for particular praise in press reports. After Morton were relegated in the 1948-49 season, he moved on to Stranraer for a short spell prior to retiring in 1950.
