Hebburn, Northumberland born left back Alec Milne started his football career with County Durham club West Stanley in 1910, joining hometown club Hebburn Argyle in 1911. He didn’t turn professional until after the First World War when he joined Second Division club Stoke in 1919, making his Football League debut against Barnsley in August 1919. Milne played 204 matches over six seasons for Stoke without ever scoring, being ever present in 1920-21.
Milne then missed only one game as they won promotion to the First Division in 1921-22 as Second Division runners up but their sojourn in the top flight was short lived, as they were relegated the following season. In the summer of 1926, following Stoke’s relegation from the Second Division, he joined Third Division (North) club Doncaster Rovers, missing only two matches in his first season, playing 77 matches for Rovers through to February 1930, when he was already 40 years old, before retiring from the professional game at the end of the season.
