Description

Aberdeen born centre half Dr Vic Milne played junior football for Aberdeen Boys Brigade and Aberdeen City Boys, before playing for junior club Strath in 1914 and Aberdeen University in 1915. The son of Aberdeen’s first Chairman, Baillie Milne, he joined Scottish First Division Aberdeen in March 1920 after impressing playing for the University, making his debut the same month against Raith Rovers. He became a regular in the Dons first eleven over the next three seasons, scoring 7 goals in 122 appearances, before he signed for Aston Villa in May 1923, retaining his amateur status.

He made his Football League debut against Chelsea in September 1923, and soon established a regular place in the Villa first eleven, and in his first season played 6 FA Cup ties in Villa’s Cup run which saw them reach the 1924 FA Cup Final at Wembley, where they were beaten 2-0 by Newcastle United. Unusually for the time, Milne was the only Scot in Villa’s team, whereas Newcastle had 5 Scottish players, including the scorer of the winning goal, Neil Harris. His only goal for Villa came in a 2-1 win against Notts County at Villa Park in September 1925. He played his last match for Villa in April 1929 at Leicester City and retired from playing in May 1929. Having qualified as a Doctor of Medicine while still playing for Aberdeen, he served Aston Villa as their club doctor from 1930 to 1933.
