Description

A true one club man and stalwart, Hebburn, Northumberland born left back Wilf Milne joined north east junior club Walker Celtic in 1919 where he won the Northumberland Senior Cup, from whom he signed for newly elected Football League club Swansea Town in the  1920 close season, making his Football League debut at Northampton Town in September 1920. He played 35 times in Swansea’s inaugural Football League season and 29 times as they won promotion in 1924-25 winning the Third Division (South) Championship.

Milne spent the rest of his career in the Second Division playing his last match of 631 appearances in March 1937 when already 38 years old, unusually playing his final two matches in three days in goal, replacing the injured Stan Moore for games against Leicester City and Nottingham Forest, conceding only one goal in the two games, having featured in Swansea’s first 17 seasons as a League club almost exclusively at left back. Of these seasons he was ever present in 1930-31 and missed only 5 matches over the next four seasons.

His record of appearances for Swansea holds to this day. Milne scored his first Swansea goal on his 501st appearance for the club, a penalty, and went on to score a further six goals. Later that year he joined non league Milford United as player manager but lasted only half a season, and he then retired from playing professional football and returned to Swansea as a trainer.
