Description

Manchester born wing half Charlie Milnes began his football career with junior club Doncaster St James from where he joined Second Division Grimsby Town in August 1905, making his Football League debut against Bradford City that November. He scored once in 35 appearances over 2 seasons with The Mariners before joining Bradford Park Avenue in May 1907. He didn’t make his first team debut for Avenue until October 1908 but after that established himself as a first team regular before losing his place in 1911. Having scored 5 times in 89 appearances he joined Huddersfield Town in May 1912, making 14 appearances before joining Rochdale in 1913.

After a spell at Halifax Town in 1914 he returned to Rochdale the same year before the First World War interrupted his playing career. After the War he joined Pontypridd in 1920 before returning to Football League action with new Third Division (North) League club Tranmere Rovers, joining them in May 1921 and scoring in their inaugural Football League fixture, a 4-1 home victory over Crewe Alexandra on 27th August. He scored twice in 16 appearances during 1921-22 before returning to Rochdale in July 1922, but made no further first team appearances for them before his retirement from playing, already aged 38.
