Description

Westerhope, Newcastle upon Tyne born inside forward or half back Fred Mitcheson began his football career with Jarrow, from where he was signed by Second Division club Wolverhampton Wanderers in March 1932, spending 1932-33 at Molineux without making a first team appearance. In July 1933 he signed for Second Division club Port Vale, making his Football League debut at inside right at Manchester United in April 1934. In his next match a week later he scored a hat-trick in a 4-0 win over Plymouth Argyle. The following season, playing right half, left half, inside right and inside left, he was a regular in Vale’s team, and in November 1935 he transferred to Plymouth Argyle after 8 goals in 50 matches for The Valiants.

At Plymouth, he rotated mainly between right half and the two inside forward positions, and scored a hat-trick in a 3-4 away win at Luton Town in January 1939. He spent four seasons at Home Park, scoring 25 goals in 99 matches, before a transfer to Ipswich Town in July 1939, but after a goal in 3 matches for Ipswich in the new 1939-40 season, the outbreak of the Second World War in September 1939 effectively ended his career, although after the War he joined non league Yeovil Town in 1946, where he played until his retirement. He then returned to Plymouth Argyle in 1948 to help the training and ground staff.
