Merthyr Tydfil, Glamorgan born goalkeeper James “Jackie” Mittell began his football career with hometown Third Division (South) club Msrthyr Tydfil, spending 1924-25 on their books as an amateur without making a first team appearance. he joined Penrhiwceiber in 1925, from where he was signed by Third Division (North) club Rochdale in January 1928, making his Football League debut against Wigan Borough the same month, taking over Dale’s gloves until he lost his place in February 1929, by when he had made 47 appearances for Rochdale.

He joined Wigan Borough in June 1929, missing only two matches before spending the first half of 1930-31 on loan at Welsh League club Connah’s Quay & Shotton. He returned to Springfield Park in January 1931 but when they resigned from The League in November 1931, by when he had played 71 matches for Wigan, he joined First Division Birmingham as understudy to Harry Hibbs, making 6 top flight appearances for The Blues over two seasons.

Mittell joined Third Division (South) club Luton Town in May 1933 as understudy to George Harford, playing 8 matches for Luton in 1933-34 before a move to Irish League club Derry City in 1934. He returned to Football League action joining Hartlepools United in August 1935, where he was their principal goalkeeper for two seasons, playing 78 matches for The Monkeyhangers before moving to Barrow in May 1937. He was an ever present for Barrow during his single season at Holker Street, making 45 appearances before joining Tunbridge Wells Rangers in 1938, his career ending with the outbreak of the Second World War a year later.
