Description

Gourock, Renfrewshire born inside forward Bill (or Willie) Montgomery started his football career with Kilwinning Rangers in 1903 before playing for Rutherglen Glencairn in 1904. In November 1905 he joined Second Division Bradford City, making his Football League debut at Hull City the same month, but he failed to cement a regular place in The Bantams’ first eleven and he joined First Division Sunderland in July 1907 after 3 goals in 18 appearances. He was also a fringe player at Roker Park, scoring twice in 11 appearances during his two seasons with The Wearsiders, before joining Oldham Athletic in October 1909.

His first season saw promotion to the First Division as Second Division runners up, with Montgomery scoring 16 goals, and he played a further two seasons in the top flight for Oldham, scoring in all 26 goals in 75 appearances, before returning to Scotland to join Glasgow Rangers in 1912. He scored twice in 7 appearances for Rangers, including scoring on his debut in a 4-2 win over Airdrieonians in August 1912 as Rangers won the 1912-13 Scottish League Championship, and appearing in their Glasgow Cup Final win over Celtic that October, but Montgomery soon joined Dundee later the same year having played his last match for Rangers towards the end of October. In 1915 he joined Stevenston United before finishing his playing career with Ayr United, who he joined in 1916.
