Newfield, County Durham born right half Jim Montgomery began his football career with Bishop Auckland in 1911 and played for Shildon Athletic and Craghead United in 1912, from where he was signed by Second Division club Glossop in January 1913, making his Football League debut against Birmingham that March. He was an ever present for The Hillmen the following season and was sold to First Division club Manchester United in March 1915 after 3 goals in 73 matches for Glossop, playing 11 times for United before the onset of the First World War forced the suspension of peacetime football in May 1915.
During the conflict Montgomery served as a lance corporal in The Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers during the First World War and was awarded the Military Medal. He then returned to Old Trafford at the end of the conflict and played 16 more matches for The Red Devils once peacetime football had resumed, scoring his only United goal in a 5-1 home win over Preston North End in September 1919. He then spent 1922-23 at Crewe Alexandra but didn’t get into Crewe’s first team, returning to the north east to play once again for Craghead United in 1923 before his eventual retirement.
