Heeley, Sheffield born goalkeeper Jack Moody played junior football for Hathersage and Norton Woodseats in the early 1920’s and had trials with Sheffield United before joining First Division club Arsenal in August 1925, where he was understudy to Bill Harper and Dan Lewis, making his Football League debut at Bury in May 1927. Moody played 6 matches for The Gunners before a move to Bradford Park Avenue in May 1928, where he was understudy to Jack Clough for two seasons, making just 6 appearances in 1929-30.
Moody moved to Doncaster Rovers in August 1930, where he found regular football, playing 50 matches for Rovers before being signed by Second Division club Manchester United in February 1932, and he was an ever present in their 1932-33 campaign. He then moved to Chesterfield in August 1933 after 51 matches for The Red Devils, where he was an ever present in their 1933-34 campaign as they finished runners up in the Third Division (North), narrowly missing out on promotion.
Two seasons later he was again an ever present as The Spireites went one better winning the Third Division (North) Championship and promotion in 1936, and he was again an ever present in 1937-38 before losing his place in September 1938, perhaps through injury, after 208 matches for Chesterfield. His career after Chesterfield is uncertain however the outbreak of the Second World War a year later would certainly have ended it.
NB in the photograph he stands on the left with Arsenal reserve team forward James Shaw.
