Description

Maida Vale, London born amateur goalkeeper WR “Billy” Moon was only 19 when he made his international debut for England in a 5-1 win against Wales at The Alexandra Recreation Ground, Crewe, in February 1888, becoming England’s youngest goalkeeper, a record that would stand until Jack Butland made his England debut 124 years later and 64 days younger. He shared with Herby Arthur the record for the most caps won by a goalkeeper until Southampton’s Jack Robinson surpassed them in 1900.

Moon played for The Corinthians between 1886 and 1901, represented the London Football Association in 1887, and also played for Old Westminsters. He won a total of 7 England caps, he was made captain on his last appearance against Scotland at Ewood Park in April 1891, with 4 of his caps coming against Scotland and 3 against Wales. He also represented The South 4 times between 1887 and 1890, The Whites twice in 1890 and 1891 and The Stripes in March 1894 in international trial matches.

He also played first class cricket for Middlesex, keeping wicket in 2 matches in 1891, making 17 not out in his only first class innings.

His younger brother Leonard played cricket for Middlesex, test match cricket for England as well as playing football for The Corinthians.
