Description

Goalkeeper James Morgan played as a goalkeeper for Hamilton Academical in the mid and late 1930’s. He started in schoolboy football with St Aloysius and was a junior with Arthurlie, from where he joined Hamilton Academical. In 1935, the regular Hamilton goalkeeper, Shevlin, was badly injured just prior to the Scottish Cup Final against Rangers. The teenage Morgan deputised, saving a penalty and not being to blame for either of Jimmy Smith’s goals that allowed Rangers to prevail 2-1 in front of 87,74o spectators at Hampden Park.

In the Second World War he joined the Royal Air Force and he was killed in action in August 1944 aged around 28. Nine of the ten men on board the plane that he was lost on were never found. Morgan was mentioned in despatches for his bravery. There is now a plaque at Douglas Park to his memory commemorating his sacrifice.
