Description

Sunderland born centre half Tommy Morren began his football career with Middlesbrough Victoria in 1889 and joined Middlesbrough Vulcan in 1890, playing for Middlesbrough Ironopolis in 1891 and joining Middlesbrough in 1892. It was while with Middlesbrough that he was part of their FA Amateur Cup winning side of 1895, and soon thereafter he was signed by First Division Sheffield United, for whom he made his Football League debut against Bolton Wanderers in December 1895. In his first full season Sheffield United finished runners up in the League Championship but they went one better the following season, winning the 1898 League Championship with Morren playing 30 games across the campaign. He also played the following season at Sheffield United won the 1899 FA Cup, beating Derby County 4-1 in the Final at The Crystal Palace.

He won an England cap in March 1898 when he played and scored in a 3-2 win over Ireland at The Solitude, Belfast, and he also was selected to play against Scotland in April the following year at Aston Villa but was forced to withdraw, and never won a further cap to add to his Irish outing. He did however make two appearances for The Football League.

In 1900 he was instrumental in the team that again finished League Championship runners up. In 1901 he was back in the FA Cup Final with Sheffield United, but The Blades lost in a replay to Tottenham Hotspur at Burnden Park, Bolton, whereafter Morren’s first team appearances were increasingly occasional, his last game coming in February 1903 in an FA Cup win at Woolwich Arsenal, and he retired in 1904 after 6 goals in 188 appearances for The Blades.
