Newmilns, Ayrshire born right half Hugh Morton began his football career with Darvel. from where he joined Scottish First Division club Kilmarnock in 1922, making his Scottish League debut against Clyde that September. He soon became a first team regular at Rugby Park and played as Kilmarnock won The Scottish Cup in April 1929, beating Glasgow Rangers 2-0 at Hampden Park in front of 115,000 spectators. He was also in Killie’s team that lost the 1932 Final to the same opponent after a replay.
He played twice for Scotland on their 1929 summer tour, playing in a 1-1 draw with Germany at Grunewaldstadion, Berlin on 1st June 1929 and again 3 days later in a 2-0 win over The Netherlands in Amsterdam . He also played once for The Scottish League in a defeat to The Football League at Ibrox in March 1928.
He then fell out of favour and spent most of the 1932-33 season at Morton where he scored once in 13 matches for The Ton, but was then re-signed by Kilmarnock and finished his career there. playing his last match against Motherwell in January 1937 although he hadn’t been a first team regular since 1934, retiring having scored 17 goals in 382 matches for Kilmarnock.
