Description

Newcastle born outside left William Morton played for Walker Welbeck and Wallsend Town in local North East football after the First World War before joining Newcastle United in September 1921, with whom he spent the 1921-22 season on their books without playing for their first eleven. In August 1922 he joined Third Division (North) club Lincoln City, making his Football League debut at Halifax Town, scoring 4 goals in 21 appearances before joining Wigan Borough in June 1923. At Springfield Park he scored once in 13 appearances.

He returned to non league football with Jarrow in 1924 and joined Scotswood in 1926 before spending 1927-28 with Fulham, without making a first team appearance, returning to the North East to play with Consett, Washington Colliery and Blyth Spartans in the late 1920’s before his retirement.
