Description

Born in Bishop Auckland, County Durham, outside left Willie Murray began his football career with local junior side Eldon Lane before joining hometown club Bishop Auckland immediately after the First World War, from where he joined Derby County in the close season of 1920. He had a single season for The Rams, scoring 3 goals in 31 appearances during their 1920-21 campaign, from where he joined Middlesbrough in July 1921. He scored once in 15 matches for ‘Boro in two seasons at Ayresome Park.

He then signed for Heart of Midlothian in May 1923 and made his Scottish League debut against Leith Athletic in August 1923. He went on to score 92 goals in 374 Scottish League and Cup appearances for Hearts over the next 11 years and was a feature throughout Hearts’ teams in the 1920’s and early 1930’s. He signed for Dunfermline Athletic in November 1934 where he played until his retirement in 1935.
