Description

Stillington, County Durham born right half Lem (short for Leamon) Newcomb began his football career  with Stillington Juniors, from where he joined First Division club Middlesbrough on amateur forms, spending 1920-21 at Ayresome Park without making their first team. He joined Stockton Malleable Institute from where he was signed by Second Division club Darlington in 1926, making his Football League debut against Blackpool in February 1927, also playing a week later in a defeat at Reading. At the end of the season Newcomb joined Kent League club Sittingbourne, from where he was signed by Second Division club Millwall in 1928, making his debut in an FA Cup tie at Crystal Palace in January 1929, his only first team outing until September 1930, from when he was a regular in Millwall’s first eleven.

He was an ever present for The Lions in 1931-32 and missed only two matches the next season, and after Millwall were relegated in 1934 he played two further seasons before a transfer to Southport in the summer of 1936, by when he had scored twice in 195 matches for Millwall. He played for Southport until the outbreak of the Second World War in September 1939, by when had scored once in 96 matches

In July 1960, he took over as manager of Southport, however ill-health forced his retirement in January 1964, and he died in July of that year.
