Cramlington, Northumberland born right half Billy Newton began his football career with Blyth Spartans before the First World War, and also played for Hartford Colliery in 1914. After the War he spent 1919-20 on the books of Newcastle United without making their first eleven, joining Second Division club Cardiff City in 1920, for whom he made his Football League debut at Barnsley in February 1921, the first of 5 matches he played before the season end as The Bluebirds won promotion to the top flight finishing Second Division runners up.
Newton made just one top flight appearance for Cardiff City in January 1922 before a transfer to Second Division club Leicester City in 1923, here he became a first team regular and won the Second Division Championship with The Foxes in 1925. But he lost his place in January 1926 and joined Second Division club Grimsby Town in the 1926 close season after a single goal in 95 matches for Leicester City.
Newton had a single season at Blundell Park, playing 15 matches for The Mariners, before a move to Third Division (North) club Stockport County in the summer of 1927. Newton was a regular in his first season as they finished third in the division, then an ever present as Stockport finished runners up in 1928-29, narrowly missing out on promotion. He was still a regular in 1929-30 as they again finished runners up, missing only 5 matches in 1930-31 as they finished seventh in the division.
Newton joined Hull City in the summer of 1931 playing 28 matches for The Tigers in 1931-32 before returning to Stockport County after a single season at Boothferry Park, but he returned to Stockport County in the 1932 close season where he didn’t add to his pair of goals in 161 matches for The Hatters before finishing with professional football.
