Gateshead, County Durham born goalkeeper Cyril Newton began his football career with Medomsley Edge in 1928 and played for Howden Rangers in 1929, Consett in 1930, and Spen Black & White in 1931 before joining the books of First Division club Birmingham in February 1932 as understudy to Harry Hibbs, without making their first team. He them moved to hometown Third Division (North) club Gateshead in July 1932, making his Football League debut at Darlington that August, sharing goalkeeping duties with Ron Clark during two seasons at Redheugh Park, during which time he made 50 appearances for The Head.

Newton returned to north east non league football in the 1934 close season, first with Consett for a season, and then playing for Hexham in 1935, Annfield Plain in 1936 and Eden Colliery Welfare in 1937 before his eventual retirement.

NB the photograph was taken before the League match between Walsall and Gateshead at Fellows Park on 15th October 1932. Walsall won the match 2-0.
