Description

Little Hulton, Lancashire born goalkeeper Sydney Newton’s career is not well documented besides his spells with his two senior clubs. At Bolton Wanderers he was understudy to John Edmondson, making his Football League debut in a Second Division match against Birmingham on Christmas Eve 1910 as Bolton won promotion at the end of the season as Second Division runners up. The following season he came into The Trotters’ team mid September and played his last match of 14 top flight matches that season two days before Christmas before Edmondson came back into the side. He remained at Burnden Park without making any further first team appearances before moving to Preston North End at some point. Sharing the gloves with Charlie Jones and Billy Hayes, Newton played 8 matches for The Lambs between September 1914 and January 1915, his last known club.
