Bethnal Green, London born outside right George Nicholls, known as “Jimmy”, joined Chelsea during the First World War playing wartime football at Stamford Bridge before joining Southend United, then in the Southern League, immediately after the War in July 1919. In the Southern League match against Brentford at The Kursaal on 4th October 1919 he broke his leg and had to be carried off the pitch in splints by the VAD (Voluntary Aid Detachment). He was out of action for a comparatively short space of time returning to the first team on February 21, 1920 in a 2-1 home win over Merthyr Town.
When they joined The Football League a year later he made his debut in the inaugural Football League fixture against Brighton & Hove Albion in August 1920. and he scored once in 22 appearances in their inaugural campaign before moving to Wales to play with Welsh League Ton Pentre in the summer of 1921.
He returned to The Football League in June 1922 with Rochdale, for whom he made 17 appearances in 1922-23 before joining non league Leyton in the summer of 1923. He subsequently also played for Walthamstow Grange.
