West Bromwich born inside forward Sammy Nicholls played junior football for Kidderminster Olympic in 1887 and West Bromwich Victoria in 1888 before joining West Bromwich Albion, making his Football League debut at Everton in March 1890. He became a regular in the team in 1890-91, playing in Albion’s team that lost the 1891 FA Cup semi final to eventual winners Blackburn Rovers. The following season he was a member of the West Bromwich team that won the 1892 FA Cup Final, with Nicholls scoring the second goal in a 3-0 victory over Aston Villa at The Kennington Oval.
He joined London CBC in 1892 before returning to West Bromwich Albion in 1893, playing 8 more times in 1893-94 before retiring from the professional game, having scored 17 goals in 50 appearances for The Baggies.
