Description

Alnwick, Northumberland born centre forward Arthur Ormston started his football career with Radcliffe Welfare United of Ashington in 1919 before joining Second Division club South Shields in October 1919, for whom he didn’t play a first team match. He moved to Chesterfield in May 1920 making his Football League debut at Stalybridge Celtic in August 1920 in Chesterfield’s opening fixture in Division Three (North) in a resounding 0-6 defeat but he scored in the return game a week later at Saltergate and scored 6 times in 22 appearances for The Spireites that season.

A move to Durham City followed in September 1922 where he scored 4 goals in 18 games, before a brief 2 game spell at Coventry City in March 1923 led to him joining Barrow in August 1923. He top scored in his single season in Cumbria with 10 goals in 33 appearances, but was on the move again in March 1924, joining Wigan Borough. His 5 goals in 19 games at Springfield Park attracted Second Division Oldham Athletic to sign him in June 1925, and there followed the most productive season of his career as his 23 goals in 37 games in 1925-26 saw him top Oldham’s scoring charts. This total included a sensational 8 goals in his first two appearances, with a hat-trick in a 4-0 win over Fulham followed by 5 goals in a 7-2 win over Stoke City two days later.

He joined Bradford City in October 1926 after a total of 24 goals in 44 appearances for The Latics, scoring 6 goals in 15 matches before a move to Bristol Rovers in June 1927. His first season at Eastville again saw him top the club’s scoring chart with 15 strikes and by the time he re-joined Oldham Athletic in November 1928 he had made 27 appearances for The Pirates. However he only made 3 more appearances for Oldham in the winter of 1928 before a move to Kent League club Tunbridge Wells Rangers the following year.

He subsequently played for North Eastern League club Blyth Spartans later in 1929 and moved to Cheshire County League club Stalybridge Celtic in October 1930 where he scored 59 goals before the season end! From there he moved on to Macclesfield in 1931, where he scored 4 goals in 6 appearances before his retirement in 1932.
