Ecclesfield, Yorkshire born Arnold Oxspring was initially an inside right, who began his football career with hometown junior club Ecclesfield in 1896 before joining Midland League Doncaster Rovers in 1897. On his debut on 4th September 1897 he scored 4 goals in a 6-0 home win over Long Eaton Rangers. On 5th November 1898, he scored two in Doncaster’s joint highest win, a 14-0 victory over Huddersfield Town. Over three seasons, Oxspring scored 56 goals in the Midland League, Yorkshire League, Wharncliffe Charity Cup and FA Cup.
He then joined Second Division Barnsley in the summer of 1901, by when he had converted into a left half, and made his Football League debut against Preston North End that September, He was a regular member of Barnsley’s line up for 8 seasons before eventually losing his place in 1909, by when he had become club captain. In 1907 he was described as “a distinctly clever player, very smart in tackling, and feeds his forwards with great skill. Knows how to use his head.” He made his last appearance of 292 against Lincoln City in March 1910, having scored 4 goals for The Tykes, before his retirement from playing.
