Description

Stockton, County Durham born centre forward Bob Pailor began his football career with St Oswald’s of Stockton, playing for West Hartlepool in 1906, Wingate Albion in 1907 and again for West Hartlepool in 1908, from where he was signed by Second Division club West Bromwich Albion that October, making his Football League debut at Bradford Park Avenue in January 1909. A fringe player during his first two seasons at The Hawthorns, he became a first team regular from September 1910, scoring 12 goals in 1910-11 to help Albion win promotion to the top flight as Second Division champions.

Pailor scored a hat-trick in a win over Newcastle United in February 1912, and played in 7 ties including the FA Cup Final and its replay as The Baggies went all the way to The Crystal Palace, only to be beaten in a replay by Barnsley. The following season Pailor scored hat-tricks in matches at Aston Villa and Blackburn Rovers, but lost his place towards the season end, having been Albion’s top scorer in both seasons back in the First Division, and only played twice in 1913-14 before signing for Newcastle United for a £1,550 fee after 47 goals in 92 matches for West Bromwich Albion. He scored 5 goals in 16 matches for The Toon but was forced to retire in 1915 due to a kidney complaint.
