Weymouth born winger Fred “Spider” Parker played for Clapton (now Leyton) Orient from 1907, when he made his Football League debut at Leeds City that September after signing from Salisbury City, and was for many years their club captain. His career was interrupted by World War One in which he distinguished himself by his leadership, being the first footballer to volunteer for The Footballer’s Battalion in 1915. He survived the War, unlike 3 fellow Clapton Orient players who were killed at The Somme in 1916. Soon after the War whilst Parker was still the club captain The Prince of Wales, later King Edward Vlll made an official visit to a home match to honour and pay respects to the club’s lead and sacrifice during The Great War. Parker made a total of 350 appearances for Clapton Orient scoring 34 goals until January 1922, when he played his last game for the club before retirement.
