Description

Lye, Worcestershire born centre half David Parkes began his football career with Staffordshire club Newcastle Town, from where he was signed by Southern League club Brighton & Hove Albion in 1912, where he played 33 matches for The Seagulls before he was signed by First Division club Sheffield Wednesday in April 1914, making his Football League debut at Derby County the same month. A regular during The Owls’ 1914-15 campaign, his career was interrupted by the onset of the First World War which forced the suspension of peacetime football in May 1915, but after the War he returned to Hillsborough and played 8 further matches during their 1919-20 campaign, which ended in relegation.

Parkes joined Second Division club Stoke in May 1920 after a single goal in 50 matches for Sheffield Wednesday, but played only 6 matches for The Potters over the course of their 1920-21 campaign before a move to Welsh League club Llanelly in the 1921 close season. He then returned to Football League action when he moved to Third Division (North) club Rochdale in June 1922 where he as an ever present in their 1923-24 campaign, missing just one match the following season. He spent six seasons at Rochdale scoring 12 goals in 219 appearances before ending his career with Cheshire League club Macclesfield in the summer of 1928, where he became club captain, playing 40 matches for The Silkmen during 1928-29 before his retirement.
