Lye, Dudley, Worcestershire born outside left Ted Partridge played with Stambermill St Mark’s prior to the First World War but after the conflict joined Ebbw Vale in 1919, moving to Manchester United in June 1920, making his League debut against Oldham Athletic that October. A regular for his first three seasons, he lost his place in April 1923 and was a fringe player thereafter, besides the December 1926 to March 1928 period when he was again mainly in the side, often playing inside left in addition to the left wing.
During his nine season United career, he made 160 appearances and scored 18 goals. He was eventually transferred to Halifax Town in the 1929 close season. He played a single season for The Shaymen, making 15 appearances, before spells at non league Manchester Central in 1929 and Altrincham in 1930 prefaced a return to the Football League with Crewe Alexandra in 1930, with whom he scored twice in 13 appearances during 1930-31 before joining Darwen later that summer, helping them to win the Lancashire Combination title before his eventual retirement.
